To Burundi: A Prisoner’s Message

Dear Readers,

This is a rough translation of the Burundian prisoner’s Message as broadcast on Mogadishu’s radio stations yesterday. It must be noted that I have translated the message using the ‘Somali’ translation that was broadcast on the radio stations, not from Burundian language. I will try to upload the original audio message (and a video if I get it) of the Burundian soldier so that readers can verify the translation.

My name is NZOBONANTUMYE THERENCE and I come from Burundi. My father’s name is ANDREA JEBARIKO and my mother’s name is VERONICA NDEREYIMANA. I am part of AMISOM’s SA ONZE battalion. I came to Somalia to fight Al-Shabab but ended up being their captive. I was captured on TUESDAY 22-02-2011

A colonel by name of URATUZA ordered us to go to Somalia in order to fight the Islamists. But when we came to Somalia and engaged AL-Shabab in battles, we realized that they were indeed dangerous and we could not defeat them. After our offensive against the Al-Shabab on Tuesday, the battle quickly intensified and many of our soldiers were killed and injured. In that disarray, the rest of the soldiers retreated and left me behind. And as soon as the soldiers deserted me, Al-Shabab soldiers captured me and then took me to one of their military compounds. That is where I am now

To The Burundian Soldiers in Mogadishu:

My advice to the Burundian soldiers is that you should refrain from waging war against Al-Shabab and the reason why I say this is because I am certain that you will never be able to defeat them. After we launched our offensive against Al-Shabab on Tuesday morning I would estimate that the number of Burundian soldiers killed in the battle to be about 50 in number. As for me I was captured alive by Al-Shabab and I am still alive and doing well. I warn you against waging war with Al-Shabab because you are fighting them in their own land and thus will never be able to defeat them.

I would also advice you to stop shelling the Somali population because whenever you shell populated areas, it is always the innocent civilians that become the victims of your shelling. As a result, when I fell into the hands of Al-Shabab, they transported me in a car and took me to a compound where many people were gathered and waiting for me. They wanted to kill me on the spot. They hurled all sorts of things at me but the Al-Shabab soldiers protected me from them. They were all angry with me and the reason for their anger is our constant shelling of innocent civilians.

To The Soldiers in Burundi:

I want to send this message to the soldiers in Burundi. My advice to you is that do not let your generals and seniors deceive you and lure you to fight in Somalia, because the rewards and the money that they promise you will eventually be of no value. Once you arrive in Somalia the only thing that awaits you here is death. As soon as we arrived in Somalia, we were sent into battles and I was captured in one of those battles along with many other soldiers. What we saw here in battles is gruesome, so I would advise you not to be deluded by your generals. The little provision that you receive in the safety of your homes is better that the fortune that would cost you your lives.

    Shocking revelations!

  2. Jackson says:

Please alshabab, be informed that we are not interested in conquiring or even living in Somalia. Our main target is restoring peace in a country that has been unrully and controlled by you as a gang of terrorists. The Somalia population you think to be supporting you are only adapted to a life of hopelessness and are unpredictable of their future.Children and women have been psycologically affected and have nothing to do but follow you since you have weapons to rule over them. The population in our liberated zone is happy despite living in a ramschackled kind of environment caused by war.Whatever you do is witnessed by the whole world and as a consequence you are seen as carnibals.Things like killing and dissecting dead bodies is associated with carnibals for we do not know what happens afterwards. You do not have respect for the dead,a sign of being unreligious.Islamic religion does not allow such kind of behaviour. It is because you are doing all sorts havoc to the population that Allah is punishing and imposing on you a life that is most switable for you.You will continue dying until you come to your senses.

  3. Reader says:

You are publishing propaganda. This poor soldier was not only wounded and exhausted he had seen these “Muslims” kick and abuse the bodies of his dead friends.

  4. Concerned Citizen says:

    Dear Jackson,

Your comment may seem true at first glance, if we use the rhetoric of western powers repeatedly regurgitated to us by their media. We must be honest and call a spade a spade… Al Shabaab have successfully setup a government where the TFG have failed year in and year out. There is peace in southern Somalia like there was when the TFG were pushed out by the Islamic Courts. Something that the Al-Shabaab group was very much apart of back then too.

Not only have they restored peace in most of the land that they control, they have also setup a working administration which is providing services to it’s citizens with very meager resources. A big triumph especially when compared to what the TFG have done (which is next to nothing) with all of the money that they were given.. This is something well known to all. No one says that they are without fault, but they are definitely much better for Somalia than TFG ever was being that they are comprised of a bunch of opportunists and war lords.

Lastly, I would like to remind everybody that the reality of the world in which we live in. It is well known that anywhere in the world that America sticks it’s nose, there has to be some kind of trouble. Does she do this because she is a defender of the people or democratic values? The answer is a big NO. She does this for her own self interest, and more specifically for the interests of a few inner circles. A beacon of democracy she is NOT.. not even for her own people. Any EDUCATED person on this subject can tell you the truth of this matter. INDEED, the presence of AMISOM in Somalia is an occupying force who’s mandate is to support a corrupt invented authority (TFG) until it’s time for them to bring in the cowboys of America to do what they do best – the wholesale raping of a nations natural resources, no matter what the cost to human lives. Uganda and Burundi are making the most unfortunate investment in Somalias future wealth with their soldiers lives. MAKE NO MISTAKE… AMISOM soldiers are the indispensable pawns of opportunists who have no respect for the sanctity of human lives.

Jackson.. May you be guided. And do us a favor and give evidence if it was indeed shabaab who mutilated any of your corpses or was it the emotional angry Somali people whose lives have been destroyed by them? Please do not talk loosely.

    • Somali Pundit says:

      Dear Concerned Citizen,
What is this government, services and peace that you speak of? The foreigners running Al Shabab are not interested in peace and government. They have openly declared this. In June 2010, on the eve of elections in his native Somaliland, their Emir Muktar Godane, declared: “The reality is that democracy is something Allah made unlawful, and someone else cannot make it lawful. (…) If people fight … till everyone is killed, that is much easier than legalising the devil’s principles such as constitutions.”
The weekend brought more news of the dispossession and extortion that is the lot of those unfortunate enough to live under the extremists. According to this report, they have been stealing animals from pastoralists under the pretext of collecting zakat, and then selling them off to fund their war.
If this is what you consider to be the best that Somalia can aspire to, then it is us who should be concerned for you.

      • Concerned Citizen says:

And the TFG is interested in peace and government? I used to see them in Nairobi running up expensive hotel bills, getting kicked out, and then moving on to the next. Fighting amongst themselves for power and at the same time letting gross violations amongst their own clansman go unchecked.. Surely, this comical UN creation (TFG) is just as serious about peace as is Israel is concerned with giving Palestinians their “rights”. Godane’s comments about democracy being Islamically wrong is something which is echoed today by ALL of the contemporary salafi scholars – even those who differ with so-called “jihadi” groups. Many services have been offered to the people including the collection and distribution of zakat, building of bridges, and lets not forget… restoring PEACE to much of southern Somalia with the exception of the current battle fronts. This is evident and has been reported on widely.. including on Al Jazeera, and our very own Mogadishu Man.

The other report which you speak of has to be verified and if it is true, there are channels in which to launch these kind of complaints. In short, I just want all of us who are educated to remember that this is a war of hearts and minds and everyone is entitled to their opinion but let us do justice and base our opinions on actual proof and not mere here say and misinformation attempts. Our BROTHERS in al shabaab are Muslims who have tried to make a difference when odds have been against them. They need the support of the Muslims to do a better job, correct their mistakes, and overall constructively criticize their efforts, not just constant slandering from people who are easily mesmerized by the West’s propaganda dream machine against any Islamic agenda.

Lastly.. I hope you areconcerned for me as I am your Muslim brother.. and we must be concerned for each other.. even if we disagree.. we should not rush to hang our brothers to dry. Especially with foreigners who are only there to pit us against each other and steal our wealth in the mean time. Trust me.. Amison, the UN, the Americans, and the Israelis.. are not concerned with any peace in any country where they can benefit. A conspiracy? I think not… just the plain truth proven again and again and agreed upon by academics and realists around the world.. Muslim, Christian, Atheist, and Jewish alike… all have agreed to this truth.

This is unclear. Who really wrote the warning message above? The actual soldier that is being deployed to Somali? for real? where did he learn that english from? Is he a Colonel himself. I’ m just saying. Thank u for your time

    • Jihadism aloft Pacifism says:

The post is very clear. Re-Read the first few lines, the intro:
“It must be noted that I have translated the message using the ‘Somali’ translation that was broadcast on the radio stations, not from Burundian language.”
If you still do not believe it, then I can find you a YouTube clip, of a local Somali news-agency that filmed this kafir PoW.

    • blurr says:

i think the message is an english translation of a somalian translation of Kirundi…and being a prisonner, the soldier may have just said what they told him to say

  6. Deogratias says:

    My brothers from other mothers,
The al-shabab movement is a shame to all Africa. How can a people pretend living peacefully without government, with guns as a rule? About the message above, it is clear that it is not a really one for two reasons. The first one is that a Burundian soldier knows verry well that he has not been deployed in Somalia under Baratuza’s orders because this one is not the Burundian Army Chief of Staff, but a simple spokesman. Burundians soldiers in Somalia know why they are there.
The second reason is that a Burundian Soldier who doesn’t know how to write ”Cent”, could speak this kind of english?
To Burundian army, especially to those who are deployed in Somalia, I say: Go forward! Bon’t be discouraged! Don’t give up the fight! You are known as vaillants. Give honor to your country and your Africa!

      • Dear Asiiimwe, You’re right iwhen someone is captured is oobliged to say what those who captured him oblige him to say ! For your information for example: there is no URATUZA colonel in burundian forces. And this colonel on which those crual un educated imbecile islamists ( al shabab) refer is the spokesman of the national army, and you can understand that a spokesman can’t send troops abroad to fight.
I talked with many somalians people recetly during my visit to somali, all those I met are very hopeless beacause of el shabab who imposes them very crual sanctions especially to those who are accused to cooperate with AMISOM troops or those who benefit from services provided by these saviors.
You can’t imagine which kind of punishment or treatment those who are captured receive at BAKARA market ( a Mogadishu downtown market where those animals impose their law, but a place I hope must be taken or mastered in upcoming days inch allah).
Abanyagihugu bafashwe nkakarorero barakurako urukoba kurya kw’impene igomba ibagwe, this is more fittable to cannibals, but el shabab don’t hesitate to do so to the population accused to has benefit hospital services from AMISOM contigent! And I’m sure that those Al shabab are also among those who are treated in different AMISOM hospitals.
Those animals (El Shabab) forbid to population to go in AMISOM hospitals but they do not propose other alternatives, they want people die of health Care shortage….
May God bless our beloved SOMALIA, may God bless all somalia good muslims, may God protect them from those insurgents, may God still blessing Burundi, Uganda and their people, may God bless good initiatives for Somaila, may God be with all people of good will who are working or thinking about how to save Somalia fromdevils which prevent this good country to recover peace.

First of all, we are not brothers; not related via kinship (blood) nor are associated through religion, and furthermore we do not share a common interest, rather you, the people of Uganda & Burundi are obstacle in the fulfillment of our lofty Islamic interests.

Secondly, your given reasons for falsifying this tread are not genuine.

      (1) The Uganda soldiers were induced by monetary gains, they were promised a monthly salary and lucrative bonuses. None of these gullible infantry soldiers were not given any background information or told about the reality that lies in Mogadishu.

      (2) Please re-read the introduction, there you will come to realize that this was translated from the Somali translation, that was aired on the local radio stations. It might have lost a bit of flavor as its hast past 2 languages [(he original Burundi language Rundi (Kirundi) & the translation; the local language, Somali ()Af Soomaali))

To the Vanguards of the Western Imperialist, the pawns of the Neo-Colonialist, the Burandian & Ugandan Crusaders’, I say to them what our Amir Sheikh Muktaar Abu Zubayr said in his recent Audio Speech (as released to the local radio stations in the Somali language):

“It seems that your soldiers and young men have been deceived and do not have much understanding with regard to the reality that lies in Mogadishu. You should be aware of the fact that states and alliances many times more powerful than you, have been crushed in Mogadishu. The Americans failed in it, and so did an alliance which consisted of countries around the world. In it, the Ethiopians – who brought a force many times more powerful than yours – were slain en masse. And your own defeat has begun, evidenced by the corpses of your soldiers being dragged through the streets and captured as prisoners of war.”

The burundian guy do no speak english nor somali linguage, but an Al Shabaab terrorist translated kirundi, Kirundi is not an international language which can be traslated by modern software, is there any al shabaab who speaks or understand kirundi? I don’t believe.

So do not be surprised if the foreigns are seen are Invaders, as Christian Crusaders’, as the Slaves of the Western Neo-Colonialist…

  7. Somali Pundit says:

    Dear Concerned Citizen,
TFG is hardly a UN creation. It is the product of more than a decade of Somali negotiations. The infighting you speak of is a thing of the past. The Farmajo government has been pretty much united since they took over. It’s not perfect, but then who is? The Al Shabab themselves have been, and perhaps still are. divided. Remember the row following the failed Ramadan offensive?

As for democracy being un-Islamic, I think brothers in North Africa and the Middle East would disagree. When you talk about a war for hearts and minds, you recognise the fundamental property of democracy i.e. that government must be consented to by the people and not imposed.

If the Al Shabab cared about the people, they would not be stopping humanitarian aid agencies from reaching them at this time of drought and famine.

      Assalaamu Alaykum warahamtullahi wabarakatuhu

Yes it is! Its stooge administration, it’s basis (conditions & plans) were set in the fortified US military bases in Qatar & Djibouti.. I mean how on earth can we as a Soomaali accept a puppet government that’s not even vieved as authentic by the Bedouins & Shepherds in our traditional villages. By Allah, I ask you, what has Sharif Mosafer (The Traveler) brought for the Soomaali People (?) other than humiliation & more dissolution.

There was no disunity among Al-Shabaab & Hizbul Islami, this was propaganda; a lying buzz of “disunity/rift” – its really sad that even some local Soomaali news websites & radio’s had embraced this as the truth and spread it far & wide. But lo!!! The brothers united & merged completely just a few months after this. Then, what became of this far-fetch conspiracy???

“Their intention is to extinguish Allah’s light (by blowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete (the revelation of) His light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it).” (Al-Saff: 8)

As for democracy, this has to do we our basic beliefs as Muslims, its a matter of Tawheed, to accept Democracy is to believe that people are sovereign, i.e. they are the Law-makers, while the Law is reserved onoly to Allah, to govern by His Book & the Sunnah of Rasullah (SAAWS). I would like to advise to read a important book that will insha-Allah clarify this to you, its entitled: “Democracy: A Religion!”, By Esteemed Sheikh Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi (May Allah Hasten His Release).
Google it and you get multiple sources to download the PDF Book for free.

Lastly regarding their close of the UN World Food Program & other NGO’s, please refer to their official Press Release, as I recall reading it, they had given them an ultimatum of one moths to empty & close their offices. I will try to get you the official press statement, will do a few searches online, insha-Allah.

      Was Salaam

      • Somali Pundit says:

Let me see if I get this straight. You are arguing that the TFG is a stooge administration that has been imposed on the people and so they should not accept it, but you support the Al Shabab doing the exact same thing?

Many Imams have condemned the Al Shabab’s extreme interpretation of Shariah. It is by no means the only, or even dominant, understanding of the Koran. Even Iran, the first country in modern times to institute an Islamic republic (and no friend of the West), regularly holds elections and its politicians seek a popular mandate. The protesters in North Africa and the Middle East are no less Muslims than you are and it is very arrogant and self-righteous to assume yours is the only interpretation that counts.

Anyway, this is a moot point for as you point out, the Al Shabab are not interested in what the people want. They just want to impose their own particular (and I might add very harsh and very limited) understanding of the Scriptures. That is why they feel no qualms about abducting kids as young as 8 and forcing them to fight. That is why they sell the animals they have supposedly confiscated fot zakat, to fund their military operations instead of feeding the poor. It is why they wantonly kill civilians with IEDs and suicide bombs claiming they are targetting TFG or AMISOM. Finally, it is why a poll released by the independent media centre, Mogadishu Media House, shows that 75% of the residents of Mogadishu and Afgooye want nothing to do with Al Shabab.

Not that the extremists care, I’m sure.

      Salaam!

Just went through the older post on the blog and found that our brother MM, may Allah reward him had covered those 2 events:

Roobow: Relationship with Al-Shabab Still Robust

      Al-Shabab: Christian Organisations Closed

Please stop limiting your resources & information, to the Western narrative of events in Somalia, if you are capable of reading in af Soomaali then read a few Somali news sites, surely that’s better that the spoon-fed Zionist propaganda of Fox-News, CBS, BBC, ABC, etc. The only thing they have in common is that they all are cronies of their respective country, advocates of “freedom” at the price of countless of Muslim & non-Muslims lives, just as long as Uncle Sam can get cheap oil, and loot the natural resources of other countries; be it in Asia, the Middle East or Africa. They do this by covertly overthrow a foreign government by launching their CIA jackals & Economical Hit-man and/or overly with troops on the ground, they initiate a Military Occupation, citing illogical reasons: “humanitarian causes”, “bringing democracy”, “WMD”… and today they are talking about ‘Intervention in Libya’.. have they not learned from their past mistakes in Lebanon, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan and many more countries.

Al-Shabaab have founded a “Drought Relief Convey”, they have collected a lot of Zakaat from the local Businessmen and merchants. They travelled to villages & cities in the drought-affected areas, bring them much needed life-saving essentials: food & water. WaAllahi it gladddend my eyes seeing the images posted on the internet, how they have done so much, with so little…

May Allah reward them with best of reward and may Allah grant Victory after Victory, this the Promise of Allah, that those people of pure natural belief in Allah who do not associate any partners to Him will be the inheritors of this world is a divine Law which is stressed in many verses of the Qur’an:

Allah has promised those of you who believe and do right actions that He will make them successors in the land as He made those before them successors, and will firmly establish for them their religion with which He is pleased and give them, in place of their fear, security. ‘They worship Me, not associating anything with Me.’ Any who are unbelivers after that, such people are deviators. They desire to extinguish Allah’s Light with their mouths. But Allah refuses to do other than perfect His Light, even though the kafirun detest it. It is He Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth to exalt it over every other deen, even though the associaters detest it. [Surat a-Tawba, 32-33]

Allah confirms the Truth by His words, even though the evildoers hate it. [Surah Yunus, 82]

Then We appointed you after them to be successors on the earth so We might observe how you would act. [Surah Yunus, 13-14]

We wrote down in the Psalms, after the Reminder came: ‘It is My servants who are righteous who will inherit the earth.’ [Surat al-Anbiya, 105]

Moses said to his people, ‘Seek help in Allah and be steadfast. The earth belongs to Allah. He bequeathes it to any of His slaves He wills. The successful outcome is for those who fear [and respect Allah].’ They said, ‘We suffered harm before you came to us and after you came to us.’ He said, ‘It may well be that your Lord is going to destroy your enemy and make you the successors in the land so that He can see how you behave.’ [Surat al-A‘raf, 128-129]

We destroyed generations before you when they did wrong. Their Messengers brought them the clear signs, but they were never going to have faith. That is how We repay evildoers. 8. Message to all the people Somalian.

Dear brothers and sisters in Somalia,I regularly soot all events that occur on land in the city of Mogadishu. The forces of peacekeeping in Burundi and Uganda are determined to help our Somali brothers and sisters to find peace and tranquility. These forces are working with the TFG for this noble mission. We would like to tell the Somali community that the forces mentioned above never wavered against the divisions of our Somali brothers and sisters of any kind until our mission is accomplished. We would like to appeal to the whole international community to support Somali and obviously the forces involved in this noble cause.
    1. For Al Shabbab, what they need is to seek opportunities to begin the path of negotiations with their brothers and sisters for a better future for all of Somalia.
    2. To all the Somali people, you tore your beautiful country with divisions of various kinds. It is time to put on the negociations table to stop you from tearing when you have had an even breast milk.

  9. I think my dear bro that that time will and must come! Al shabab they know that they are not the most important forces in Somalia, they also know that they are not the main movement supported by a big part of population. They are perhaps the most unhuman movement : the real terrorists. An other thi,g that I’d like to reveal to themis that the people hate them and (especially that this people is very afraid of them but this not mean that they agree with their methods of terrorism).

I think that the time has come to other sons and sister to call these Al shabab (whoo are also the sons of Somalia) to sit on a negotiation table and try to develop their common country, wich still need the hands of all His sons and girl to be stabilised and developped.
Please, Al Shabab let your country’s capital recover peace as other parties (somali land,…)!
Please your progeniture taste the pleasure to be educated as other worl’s children!
Please let your potential country be developped as it could be quickly be if you stop killing innocent sisters and brothers….I’m sure about what I’m saying beacause I visited many parts of your capital last days.

May God bless our beloved sister republic of SOMALIA,
May God bless all somalia good muslims,
May God protect them from those insurgents,
May God still blessing Burundi, Uganda and their people, may God bless good initiatives for Somaila, May God be with all people of good will who are working or thinking about how to save Somalia fromdevils which prevent this good country to recover peace.
